"Development of futuristic frameworks that empower and transform the supply chain industry."

The Supply Chain Sustainability and Modelling vertical at the IIT Madras-led FedEx SMART Center is committed to building a winning supply chain logistics module.

Some of the projects initiated under this vertical include:

  • Customer email analysis with the application of LLAMA Model through which teams explored various areas that generated automated work processes.

  • Issues and Challenges in Multi-Modal Logistics in India.

  • Making India a Global Transshipment Hub - A white paper.

  • Optimizing Air Cargo Capacity using ULD Assignment and 3D Parcel Packing.

  • Demand Analysis for Capacity Planning: Granular Demand Forecasting Model for FedEx's International Shipping Operations.

  • Optimized Infrastructure placement for air taxi system.

  • Multi-echelon distribution network design.

  • Employee Well-being in Logistics Sector.

All these projects apply a research-driven approach that studied diverse issues like feasibility and possibilities of routes and transport, identifying parameters for employee wellness through Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Construct Validity Analysis and Final Reporting. Other studies include exploration of various transshipment processes and study of literature-based data to understand policies, regulatory frameworks and challenges. Through all these initiatives the IIT Madras-led FedEx SMART Center is working towards developing frameworks for tracking carbon footprint, managing its impact and reducing emissions in the logistics sector.

    Key focus areas include:

  • Demand Forecasting and Capacity Planning - To develop AI / ML - driven predictive models for lead time, demand forecasting and capacity planning.

  • ULD Optimization - Enhance sustainability by maximizing cargo space utilization and reduce fuel consumption in air logistics. This improves supply chain efficiency while lowering the carbon footprint of transportation operations.

  • Digital Twin - Leverage digital twin technologies for real-time tracking, monitoring, and optimization of global shipments, warehousing, and packaging.

  • Multi-modal logistics - Enhance multi-modal global logistics by identifying inefficiencies and fostering collaboration among governments and industries.

  • Employee Wellness - Incorporate ESG factors, promoting socially responsible supply chains and leveraging digital tools to empower worker well-being.

  • Transshipment - Optimize supply chains by enabling efficient cargo transfers, reducing transit times and transportation emissions.
